The trial of Bryan Kohberger – the man who brutally murdered four University of Idaho students inside their off-campus home – ended in July before it ever truly began when he accepted a plea deal that saw him sentenced to four consecutive life terms in prison without the possibility of an appeal or parole.

Kohberger sat impassively throughout the hearing as the loved ones of each of the four students whose lives he so callously ended repeatedly asked him the same question: Why?

And when he was finally given the opportunity to answer their questions, he said, “I respectfully decline.”

That decision further fueled the mystery around his motive for murdering Xana Kernodle, Madison Mogen, Ethan Chapin and Kaylee Goncalves.

“There’s no reason for these crimes that could approach anything resembling rationality,” Idaho District Judge Steven Hippler said during Kohberger’s sentencing. “The more we try to extract a reason, the more power and control we give to him.”

But, he added, investigators and researchers may wish to study his actions – if only to learn how to prevent similar crimes from occurring in the future.

Indeed, academics and former FBI profilers told CNN the challenge of unravelling the criminal mind of a man like Bryan Kohberger is enticing. And while his trial may be over, in many ways, the story of what can be learned from his crimes may have only just begun.

“We want to squeeze any silver lining that we can out of these tragedies,” said Molly Amman, a retired profiler who spent years leading the FBI’s Behavioral Threat Assessment Center.

“The silver lining is anything we can use to prevent another crime. It starts with learning absolutely, positively everything about the person and the crime that we possibly can.”

Even seasoned police officers who arrived at 1122 King Road on November 13, 2022, struggled to process the brutality of the crime scene.

All four victims had been ruthlessly stabbed to death before the attacker vanished through the kitchen’s sliding glass door and into the night.

“The female lying on the left half of the bed … was unrecognizable,” one officer would later write of the attack that killed Kaylee Goncalves. “I was unable to comprehend exactly what I was looking at while trying to discern the nature of the injuries.”

Initial interviews with the two surviving housemates gave investigators a loose timeline and a general description of the killer – an athletic, White male who wore a mask that covered most of his face – but little else.

Police later found a Ka-Bar knife sheath next to Madison’s body that would prove to be critical in capturing her killer.

One of the surviving housemates told police about a month before the attacks, Kaylee saw “a dark figure staring at her from the tree line when she took her dog Murphy out to pee.”

“There has been lighthearted talk and jokes made about a stalker in the past,” the officer noted. “All the girls were slightly nervous about it being a fact, though.”

But after years of investigating the murders, detectives told CNN they were never able to establish a connection between Kohberger and any of the victims, or a motive.

Kohberger is far from the first killer to deny families and survivors the catharsis that comes with confessing, in detail, to his crimes. But that, former FBI profilers tell CNN, is part of what makes the prospect of studying him infuriating and intriguing.

Planet-heating methane is escaping from cracks in the Antarctic seabed as the region warms, with new seeps being discovered at an “astonishing rate,” scientists have found, raising fears that future global warming predictions may have been underestimated.

Huge amounts of methane lie in reservoirs that have formed over millennia beneath the seafloor around the world. This invisible, climate-polluting gas can escape into the water through fissures in the sea floor, often revealing itself with a stream of bubbles weaving their way up to the ocean surface.

Relatively little is known about these underwater seeps, how they work, how many there are, and how much methane reaches the atmosphere versus how much is eaten by methane-munching microbes living beneath the ocean.

But scientists are keen to better understand them, as this super-polluting gas traps around 80 times more heat than carbon dioxide in its first 20 years in the atmosphere.

Methane seeps in Antarctica are among the least understood on the planet, so a team of international scientists set out to find them. They used a combination of ship-based acoustic surveys, remotely operated vehicles and divers to sample a range of sites in the Ross Sea, a bay in Antarctica’s Southern Ocean, at depths between 16 and 790 feet.

What they found surprised them. They identified more than 40 methane seeps in the shallow water of the Ross Sea, according to the study published this month in Nature Communications.

Many of the seeps were found at sites that had been repeatedly studied before, suggesting they were new. This may indicate a “fundamental shift” in the methane released in the region, according to the report.

Methane seeps are relatively common globally, but previously there was only one confirmed active seep in the Antarctic, said Sarah Seabrook, a report author and a marine scientist at Earth Sciences New Zealand, a research organization. “Something that was thought to be rare is now seemingly becoming widespread,” she told CNN.

Every seep they discovered was accompanied by an “immediate excitement” that was “quickly replaced with anxiety and concern,” Seabrook said.

The fear is these seeps could rapidly transfer methane into the atmosphere, making them a source of planet-heating pollution that is not currently factored into future climate change predictions.

The scientists are also concerned the methane could have cascading impacts on marine life.

The research team observed the planet with Webb in 2024, making a clear detection of the surrounding disk. Next, the researchers studied it using the X-shooter spectrograph on the Very Large Telescope, which can capture different wavelengths of light emitted by an object ranging from ultraviolet to near-infrared.

“I fully expected that this is a short-term event, because those are much more common,” Scholz said. “When the burst kept going through July and August, I was absolutely stunned.”

Follow-up observations made using the Webb telescope also showed that the chemistry of the disk had changed. Water vapor, present during the growth spurt, wasn’t in the disk before. Webb is the only telescope capable of capturing such detailed changes in the environment for such a faint object, Scholz said. Prior to this research, astronomers had only ever seen the chemistry of a disk change around a star, but not around a planet.

Comparing observations from before and during the event showed that magnetic activity seems to be the main driver behind how much gas and dust is falling on the planet — a phenomenon typically associated with stars as they grow.

But the new observations suggest that objects with much less mass than stars — the rogue world is less than 1% the mass of our sun — can have strong magnetic fields capable of driving the growth of the object, according to the study authors.

A planet that acts like a star
The origin of rogue planets remains murky. It’s possible they are planets that are kicked out of orbit around stars due to the gravitational influence of other objects. Or perhaps they are the lowest-mass objects that happen to form like stars. For Cha 1107-7626, astronomers said they think it’s the latter.

“This object most likely formed in a way similar to stars — from the collapse and fragmentation of a molecular cloud,” Scholz said.

A molecular cloud is a massive, cold cloud of gas and dust that can stretch for hundreds of light-years, according to NASA.

“We’re struck by quite how much the infancy of free-floating planetary-mass objects resembles that of stars like the Sun,” Jayawardhana said in a statement. “Our new findings underscore that similarity, and imply that some objects comparable to giant planets form the way stars do, from contracting clouds of gas and dust accompanied by disks of their own, and they go through growth episodes just like newborn stars.”

Суд идет с февраля 2024 года, обвинения строятся почти исключительно на показаниях Набойченко.Но не приходит в суд -- сначала скрывался на юге России, рассказывая, что его преследуют и ему угрожают, а с конца прошлого года находится на СВО, насколько известно, служит айтишником в 3-м армейском корпусе.Служба не мешает ему почти круглосуточно быть он-лайн в хейтерских чатах, комментируя все подряд – но якобы делает невозможной явку в суд. Это ни что иное, как способ спрятаться от очного участия в суде – к тому же представить себя участником боевых действий.     Мистер вредные привычки На допросе во время предварительного следствия Набойченко заявил, что на учете у нарколога не состоит, алкоголь и наркотические вещества не употребляет. Вот несколько роликов из хейтерского чата, из которых видно правда это или нет: весьма характерные заторможенная речь и расторможенное сознание. О том, что Набойченко лжет о том, что он чист, прекрасно известно было следователю в момент допроса. О лжи Набойченко говорят и документы, имеющиеся в деле. Справка НД г. Санкт-Петербурга (№ 319/Н-2021 от 14.06.2021) фиксирует постановку Набойченко Е.А. на учет по факту хронической алкогольной интоксикации, категория наблюдения – «диспансерная». Карта лечения частной клиники «Возрождение» (филиал на ул. Лени Голикова) за период с 10.08.2021 по 03.09.2021 описывает три срыва при попытке амбулаторной реабилитации, рекомендует стационар. Заключение судебно-медицинского эксперта (дело № 587/25-с-23, том 5, л.д. 143–147) подтверждает факт длительного злоупотребления спиртным и «признаки вероятного комбинированного (алко-/транквилизаторного) синдрома». В апреле 2025 года бывшая супруга Виктория Набойченко рассказала в частном порядке (она подтвердит это в суде), что за последние два года Евгений Набойченко минимум пять раз проходил «детокс», но каждый раз срывался, через день-два после выписки все повторялось.   А вот только некоторые документы краснодарского периода жизни Набойченко. Из них видно, что он практически не просыхал. О перманентном состоянии опьянения свидетельствуют и соцсети Набойченко, в которых он без стеснения рассказывал о достоинствах «грибов», которыми шлифовал водку. Ни на одном из эфиров в соцсетях, которые он вел после 2022 года, он не был трезвым – именно поэтому их после выпуска и удалял.   Дебошир и психопат Систематическое избиение своей жены и ребенка стали причиной развода с Набойченко его первой и единственной на данный момент жены Виктории. Алименты, он, разумеется, не платит – причем много лет. Однажды остановившись у своей любовницы Светланы, Евгений избил ее и украл деньги с ее криптовалютного кошелька, пока она пыталась прийти в себя после побоев. Собственную «официальную» семью и родных он обворовывал много раз. Еще до февраля 2022 года клиенты жаловались на хищения активов с кошельков клиентов «Гермеса», к которым Евгений Набойченко имел доступ, а также на вымогательство денег со счетов клиентов. Ему постоянно нужны деньги на наркотики. Возможно, немалые «боевые» стали одной из причин того, что он подписал контракт на СВО.   Вымогатель Набойченко также промышляет вымогательством. По словам его бывшей жены Виктории Набойченко, он шантажировал Романа Василенко – требовал с него 170 тыс. евро за то, что не даст полиции нужных ей показаний. При этом, по утверждению Виктории, угрожал увечьями супруге Романа Василенко и его несовершеннолетним детям. Похвалялся перед (тогда еще) женой своими матерными сообщениями с угрозами, которые он посылал Василенко и его родным. Кроме того, Набойченко вымогал деньги у клиентов «Гермеса» – чтобы их средства «случайно» не зависли в платежной системе.    Завербованный органами Виктория Набойченко сообщает, что за три дня до обыска в их тогда еще совместном доме Евгений уехал и ей сказал: «Придут с обыском – но это пустая формальность». Как выяснилось, он за три дня был предупрежден об этом обыске. 15 февраля 2022 года Евгений Набойченко был задержан, но отправился не в СИЗО – куда отправили других сотрудников «Лайф-из-Гуд», он не был также помещен в изолятор или КПЗ, он жил на полицейской квартире. Набойченко отказался от услуг адвоката – но довольно быстро из подозреваемого стал свидетелем: потому что дал нужные следствию показания. Именно поэтому следствие так цепляется за него как за свидетеля – у него, по сути, есть всего один свидетель для подтверждения вымышленного обвинения: Набойченко.
